Twisted Acres is our home and farm. My wife and I have lived on our property (10 Acres) for 20 years but with jobs, and raising 5 sons we were busy all the time. Way too busy for farm work. Then in November of 2006 we decided that since the kids where grown and the bills were paid we would give it a try.
So we went out and purchased two Pot Belly Piglets. Huey & Duey both males and both a little odd. They were reddish brown and quite musky. We thought possibly wild, but they met all the guidelines for Pots other than their odd color. I have since seen one other with the same colorization. They became some of our coolest pets.
Shortly after, we picked up two sisters by the names of Thelma & Louise. They were more typical of what one would expect from a Pot Belly and blue in color. Together with Huey and Duey they have made some of the prettiest piglets. Colors ranging from Black, Black White, Blue, Salt Pepper and a little bit of pink throughout.
Anyway, to keep a long story short we encountered a very large Tornado in February. With loss of homes and life the area we live, it was devastating. Our neighbors lost homes in a 360 degree radius around us and yet somehow our home was not damaged. The farm however, was wiped out. Even with over 300 trees down, fences, shelters, & a feed room destroyed, the animals were all safe! Well, other than our Pit Bull that got picked up and thrown through a window. Ever since, he is off duty when it even looks like rain.
So, we started the rebuilding process and adopted the name Twisted Acres. The devastation was unbelievable. It was the most incredible thing my wife and I had ever witnessed.
That was a year and a half ago. The neighborhood is coming back slowly. Our son Daniel returned home and has helped us rebuild and improve on the farm. Ironically the Tornado helped us open up larger areas that we needed to expand our tiny farm. With the removal of so many trees the landscape changed and was much better for pastures and pens.
We now have a wide variety of animals, that we enjoy and care for. We are just starting to see the rewards for our efforts as our foundation stock is doing well and babies of all breeds are either on the ground or in the making.
We have since met many wonderful people and have learned a great deal about living a much simpler life and enjoying everyday for all it has to offer. We look forward to meeting like minded people in the future and hope that small farms will prosper and provide for people in our small rual communites.
Turn off the TV and go plant something! Pet the horse, milk the cow, listen to the peacock. You will feel better and have a renewed faith in what this world has to offer!
